Bryony L Ross PhD, MSc, BSc(hons), ERT

Principal Toxicologist & Team Leader – Human Safety

Bryony has more than 20 years of experience in supporting clients with complex toxicological and regulatory challenges, and is highly regarded for translating science into clear, and defensible strategies, that enable informed decision-making and keep programmes moving.

As part of her role as principle toxicology and human health consultant, Bryony specialises in chemical hazard and risk assessment, reproductive and developmental toxicology (DART), endocrine disruption and nanotoxicology. Her work is grounded in scientific rigour but driven by pragmatism – developing intelligent, proportionate testing and assessment approaches that deliver regulatory confidence, while aligning with animal welfare and the 3Rs principles. Clear, persuasive scientific communication is central to Bryony's approach, whether advising clients, engaging regulators or supporting advocacy activities.

At Blue Frog Scientific, Bryony leads the Human Safety team, overseeing the delivery of hazard and risk assessment projects from early-stage scoping through to regulatory submission. Her role spans data gap analysis, testing strategy development, study monitoring (including complex and higher-tier studies), data interpretation, reporting and dossier support. As a principal consultant, she works closely with clients to shape strategy, manage risk and solve challenging toxicological questions, particularly where bespoke approaches or regulatory dialogue are required.

Bryony brings extensive experience from research, consultancy and academic environments. She holds a PhD in the male reproductive toxicity of engineered nanomaterials and has contributed to numerous systematic reviews, horizon-scanning activities and high-profile UK and EU-funded projects. She has worked extensively with multidisciplinary international teams and has direct experience engaging with regulators, government bodies, the OECD and standardisation organisations – experience that adds real value when navigating evolving regulatory expectations.

In addition to client work, Bryony is a full member of the UK Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT), a committee of independent experts that provides advice to the Food Standards Agency, the Department of Health and Social Care, and other Government Departments and Agencies on matters concerning the toxicity of chemicals in food, consumer products and the environment. Bryony also sits on the British Toxicology Society’s Executive Committee and contributes to public communications activities through the Public Communications Steering team. And, Bryony is a Visiting Fellow (Lecturer) at Edinburgh Napier University, and delivers guest lectures for Heriot Watt University’s Toxicology MSc.

Energetic, decisive and highly collaborative, Bryony is valued by clients for her strategic insight, clarity of thinking and ability to drive projects forward while maintaining scientific integrity and regulatory credibility.
