Long-Term, Science-Led Approach to PFAS Regulation

The UK government has published a policy paper, 'PFAS Plan: Building a Safer Future Together', setting out its long-term, strategic approach to managing risks from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The plan is built around three core pillars:

  1. Understanding PFAS Sources
  2. Tackling PFAS Pathways
  3. Reducing PFAS Exposure

UK Government’s PFAS Plan: From Knowledge Gaps to Action

The government proposes a long-term, science-led approach to PFAS regulation, aimed at protecting human health and the environment while recognising that some PFAS uses remain critical where viable alternatives are not yet available. Alongside this, the strategy seeks to address key knowledge gaps, align with industry-led PFAS initiatives, and assess the effectiveness of regulatory approaches adopted in other jurisdictions.

To support delivery of this vision, the UK has also set out an initial list of indicative actions intended to drive early progress and shape the future development of the UK’s PFAS regulatory framework.
